Join the Army

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Hebrews 10:24-25

Finding a good, Biblical church is critical to your Christian walk and a command from our Lord’s Word (Heb 10:24-25). The idea of a solo “just me and my Bible” Christian is as foreign to the Bible as the concept of an “army of one” is to military strategy. The church is the body of Christ, and a body is meant to function through the proper working of all its parts (1 Cor 12:12-31; Eph 4:1-16).

Like a mighty army moves the church of God;
Brothers, we are treading where the saints have trod;
We are not divided; all one body we,
One in hope and doctrine, one in charity.

Onward, Christian Soldiers (Hymn)

With that said, false teachers and false churches abound. You must be diligent to find a Biblical church. The Founders Ministry church locator is a good resource to find a solid church, but not all good churches are listed there. Below are a list of distinctives a good church should have:

  • Belief in the inerrancy and sufficiency of Scripture (2 Tim 3:16-17)
  • Commitment to expository preaching and teaching (1 Tim 4:13; 2 Tim 4:1-2)
  • Require believing membership (2 Cor 6:14-18)
  • Practice church discipline (Matt 18:15-20)
  • Led by a plurality of Biblically-qualified elders (Acts 14:23; 1 Tim 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9)
  • Focused on discipleship/training the congregation for godliness (2 Tim 2:2; Eph 4:11-13)
  • Active in evangelism (Matt 28:18-20; Rom 10:13-17)
  • Administers the ordinances of Baptism and Communion (Acts 2:38; Acts 22:16; 1 Cor 11:23-26)
